At a time when humans are consuming our planet's resources at an alarming rate, awareness of sustainable lifestyles is becoming increasingly important. Our diet plays a central role in this, as the way we produce and consume food has a profound impact on the environment.
- How can we care for the earth by living consciously in harmony with nature?
- How can we conserve their precious resources every day?
- How are we at Tigogreen working to achieve this in concrete terms?
The earth: our home and our responsibility
Our Earth is a unique planet that supports life in a diversity that is unrivalled. But this precious balance is under threat. Soil exploitation, industrial agriculture and excessive consumption have led to an environmental crisis that we can only avert through deep awareness and respectful action.
Sustainable nutrition: a key to conserving resources
A sustainable diet means choosing and consuming food that has as little impact on the planet as possible. This includes various aspects:
-
Regionality and seasonality: Consuming regional and seasonal food significantly reduces the carbon footprint, as long transport routes and energy-intensive storage are avoided. In addition, this supports local farmers and contributes to the preservation of agricultural diversity.
-
Reduction of meat consumption: The production of meat is extremely resource-intensive. A plant-based diet, at least in part, can help to reduce soil pollution and water wastage. It also releases fewer greenhouse gases.
-
Organic farming: The use of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers is not only harmful to the environment, but also to our health. Organically grown food protects the soil, promotes biodiversity and is often richer in nutrients.
-
Avoidance of food waste: Millions of tonnes of food are wasted worldwide every year. By shopping more consciously, storing food correctly and using leftovers creatively, we can make a significant contribution to conserving resources.
Example: Sustainability on green tea plantations
Green tea plantations are an excellent example of sustainable agricultural practices. Green tea plantations, which are organically farmed, utilise methods that protect the environment while providing high-quality produce. These plantations utilise:
-
Natural pest control: Instead of using chemical pesticides, organic tea plantations rely on natural pest control methods, such as the use of beneficial insects or the planting of companion plants that keep pests away.
-
Preservation of soil fertility: The use of compost and natural fertilisers maintains and even improves soil fertility. This promotes healthy plant growth and maintains the productivity of the soil in the long term.
-
Water management: Efficient irrigation systems and water retention measures help to minimise water consumption and protect the valuable resource of water.
-
Social responsibility: Many organic tea plantations also attach great importance to fair working conditions and supporting local communities. This not only promotes sustainable agriculture, but also social justice.
-
Respect for nature: A fundamental attitude
A deep awareness of the interrelationships in nature leads to a respectful approach to it.
This respect manifests itself in various areas:
-
Conservation of biodiversity: The diversity of species is essential for stable ecosystems. By buying organic and fair trade products, we support farming practices that promote biodiversity.
-
Soil protection: Healthy soils are the basis for productive agriculture. Practices such as crop rotation, composting and minimising the use of chemicals contribute to soil health.
-
Reduce water consumption: Water is a vital resource. Making irrigation systems more efficient and reducing water consumption in everyday life helps to conserve this precious resource.
Agriculture in harmony with the environment
Traditional agricultural practices that are in harmony with nature offer many solutions to today's challenges. Here are some approaches that have proven their worth:
-
Permaculture: This method mimics natural ecosystems and aims to create agricultural systems that are sustainable and self-regulating.
-
Agroforestry: Integrating trees and shrubs into agricultural land promotes biodiversity, protects the soil and improves the microclimate.
-
Regenerative agriculture: This practice aims to improve soil fertility, sequester carbon and minimise environmental impact.
Raising and maintaining awareness
Awareness of the environment and our diet must be raised and maintained at an individual and societal level. Education plays a key role here:
Education and enlightenment: Schools, the media and organisations should provide more information about the links between food, agriculture and the environment.
Community initiatives: Projects such as community gardens, local markets and food co-ops promote community awareness and the exchange of knowledge.
Political measures: Governments can promote sustainable practices through legislation and incentives, such as subsidies for organic farming or programmes to reduce food waste.
A life in harmony with nature
Conscious living that conserves the earth and its resources starts with each individual. Here are some practical tips that are easy to implement:
Conscious consumption: Think about the impact the product has on the environment every time you buy it. Only buy what you really need and choose sustainable alternatives.
Self-catering: Having your own vegetable garden, even in a small space such as a balcony, can not only provide fresh, healthy food, but also raise awareness of the value of food.
Share and swap: Sharing and swapping food and goods with neighbours and friends reduces consumption and strengthens the community.
Sustainability and environmental awareness at Tigogreen
Here are some details of our sustainable measures:
-
Glass packaging:
The glass packaging for our Tigovit and Tigofem products was put together personally by the founder Tanja Hohenester. We source the glass bottles from Austria, while the bamboo lids come from Italy. We use glass packaging from Germany for our Tigoderm products.
-
Green tea:
Our green tea extract is the only raw material we source from China, as it is of the best quality there. The plantation is certified organic according to EU guidelines and the extraction method is the purest available. The freshly harvested green tea leaves are extracted using only water, without solvents, to guarantee the highest purity of green tea extract. Each batch is laboratory tested both on site and here in Germany to ensure that it does not contain aluminium (which is often found in green tea extracts) or other harmful substances.
-
Refill packs:
We use the metallised bags from Packiro for our refill packs. You can find more information here: Packiro refill packs.
We sell health and use raw materials from nature. That's why we want to give something back to nature with our sustainable thinking. We do everything we can to reduce waste and have consciously decided against plastic cans. Our glass bottles offer a refill option, because our motto is:
"Refilling instead of throwing away!"
These measures ensure that our products are not only high quality, but also sustainable and environmentally friendly. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of our production.
Conclusion
A deep awareness of our planet and a sustainable diet are essential steps towards protecting the environment and living a respectful life in harmony with nature. By rethinking and adapting our eating habits, we are helping to conserve natural resources and leave a world worth living in for future generations. Every small step counts, and together we can make a big difference.
