Green tea has been known for its benefits for centuries, and in recent years interest in green tea extracts has increased significantly. In particular, the demand for green tea extracts with high concentrations of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is increasing. As a manufacturer of high-quality green tea extracts, we are often asked by our customers: "Why are your tigovit green tea capsules not certified organic?"
In this article, we would like to explain what organic certification is all about. What quality criteria do we apply at tigovit? Why is organic certification not always synonymous with the highest quality?
What does "certified organic" actually mean?
Organic certification is awarded to products that meet certain criteria set by national and international organisations. These criteria primarily relate to the cultivation and processing of raw materials. In the case of food, this means that it must be grown without synthetic pesticides, without chemical fertilisers and without the use of genetically modified seeds. The further processing of the products must also follow strict standards to ensure that no unauthorised additives are used.
In the EU, organic certification is regulated by the EU Organic Regulation. Products bearing the organic label must contain at least 95 % of organically grown ingredients. The remaining 5 % may only consist of strictly regulated exceptions. The aim of organic certification is to offer consumers a product that has been produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
Our quality criteria at tigovit
At tigovit, the quality of our products takes centre stage. Our focus is on offering our customers the best of nature, supported by scientific research and state-of-the-art technology. Our green tea capsules contain a highly concentrated green tea extract with a particularly high content of EGCG, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the most scientifically researched of all catechins. This highly concentrated green tea extract, standardised to 60% EGCG, is embedded in a second green tea extract. This contains the broad, natural spectrum of all polyphenols and plant substances, so that the best of both worlds is included. Our green tea extracts are also all decaffeinated.
The green tea plants we use are certified organic in accordance with EU guidelines and are regularly inspected. Every batch of our product is tested in independent laboratories for possible contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, aluminium and other harmful substances. This ensures that our products are not only safe, but also of the highest quality. We make these laboratory results transparently available on our website so that every customer has the opportunity to convince themselves of the purity and quality of our products.
In addition, our team consists of experts who regularly visit the tea-growing regions and personally check the conditions on site. Our founder, Tanja Hohenester, attaches particular importance to regularly visiting the plantations from which we source our green tea herself. This ensures that the cultivation practices meet our high standards and that the quality of our raw materials remains constant.
Why organic does not automatically mean top quality
There is a common misconception that organic products automatically offer the highest quality on the market. Whilst organic certification does indeed ensure that certain organic standards are met, this does not necessarily mean that the end product offers the best qualities for the consumer.
A central point at tigovit is the decision to develop a Green tea extract with a particularly high EGCG concentration of 60 %. EGCG is the main active ingredient in green tea, which is said to have numerous health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and possibly anti-cancer properties. To achieve such a high concentration, it is necessary to process the green tea extract in an elaborate process that goes beyond what would be possible in a conventional certified organic process.
Why can't EGCG be certified organic?
A decisive reason why tigovit green tea capsules The reason why green teas are not certified organic lies in the concentration of EGCG. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has clear guidelines for organic certification, and a green tea extract with an EGCG concentration as high as ours does not fall under the conditions required for organic certification.
Pure EGCG in the form found in our capsules is no longer a natural product. Rather, it is a highly concentrated extract that is obtained using special processes in order to maximise its effectiveness. Such extracts cannot be labelled as "organic" as they go beyond what is considered a natural and untreated substance. The EFSA has clarified that such highly concentrated extracts that have been isolated and processed cannot be certified as organic products.
Transparency and trust
Another important aspect of our work at tigovit is transparency. We firmly believe that trust is the basis of every customer relationship. That is why we not only offer high-quality products, but also disclose how these products are manufactured. The laboratory test results of each production batch are available to all customers on our website. This transparency allows our customers to make an informed decision and be confident that they are purchasing a product that is not only safe and effective, but also of the highest quality.
Over a decade of experience
tigovit has been on the market for over ten years and in that time we have built a reputation for quality and trust. We are proud to be on the market with a product that convinces with its effectiveness and purity, even if it is not certified organic.
